Let us know of any campgrounds you would recommend to others. Don't forget name, area, directions, pros, cons. Thanks

I love Cave Mountain Lake just outside Natural Bridge Station Va. It's a national forest property. The facilities were built during the CCC era and area well kept. They have no elec hookups nor sewer hook ups but have clean showers and bathrooms. The campground is located in a little valley with lots of shade and privacy. It's near the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are some neat gravel forest roads for mtn bkng with lots of climbing. Nice place.

We love Moonshine Creek, the staff is very friendly and there is sweet little creek running through the campground. It is a great place for a small travel trailer or pop-up. There is a small playground for the kiddies and it is very cool due to elevation and abundance of trees. It is in Balsam, NC off of 26/74, about 10 mins past Waynesville, which is also a great own to visit.

I like Mile High Campground just off a spur of the Blue Ridge Parkway going south towards Cherokee right past where it intersects with Hwy 19 that leads from Maggie Valley to Cherokee.  If you get on the parkway at that intersection and go towards Cherokee on the parkway, in about a mile you will see a spur to the right leading to Balsam Mountain.  Once on the road it will look like you are still on the parkway.  Go about a mile or so and look carefully on the left for a big sign back off the road that says, "Mile High Campground".  (Note: If you go to the end of this road, you'll pass by a government campground which is similar to Mile High but has no shower facilities.)

The reason I like it is because it has great views from the campsites, is a mile high, so it's cool in the summer, and has hot showers available.  The owners/managers want campers to be quiet after 10PM, which is a good and bad thing, according to what you like in camping.  You can have a fire at your site, and it doesn't have to be in the metal grill, like in government sites.

I have used this site for a combo camping/tubing weekend for friends.  We go to Deep Creek which is on the north end of Bryson City, not far away.  I found it preferable to camp at Mile High Campground rather than at the government, Deep Creek Campground, since that place is like living in a tent city with lots of noise of people and even cars and trucks driving right by your tent all day long into the night.

The cost of camping at Mile High is basically the same as anywhere else.  You can rent single campsites or group sites.  The group sites don't all have good views though.   Here's a link to the Mile High via some other 'hiking the carolinas' site:
http://hikingthecarolinas.com/camping.php  If you go to this site it will explain more in detail what I have written here.
